Antonia Economou is an Athens based dancer, choreographer and director. Her artistic practice explores themes of decay, decadence, and the fragility of the human mind, illuminating spaces where the boundaries between the real and the imagined begin to blur. Fostering an ongoing dialogue between cinema, the visual arts and her movement practices, molding her own image dramaturgy.
Her most recent dance theatre work, ATITLON (2024–2025), received warm critical acclaim and was presented in sold-out performances in Athens. Her short films, I WONDER YES I CONFESS I WONDER and SCOTÓMA, have been awarded and selected in 17 international film festivals.
She pursued her studies in dance and choreography at London Studio Centre before earning a BA Hons Degree in History of Art (American College of Greece) which constantly fuels her work and her creative output in performance.
As a dancer she has performed in the following works: Dreams of Time by Dafin Antoniadou (Arc for Dance Festival 2023), THE BIG CYPHER by Ilias Chatzigeorgiou (Athens Epidaurus Festival 2022), ΤΣΙΚΟ, a joyful performance by Tsiko with love (Tzamia Krystalla 2024), ALEKO dir. Fanny Ardant & choreographed by Israel Galván (Greek National Opera, SNFCC 2024), MOIRAI by Eleni Kavvada 240791 (video project 2024), EMPATHETIC BODIES by Anna Papathanasiou and Inga Galinyte/Touching Faultlines by Panos Giannikopoulos & Angeliki Tzortzakaki (All of Greece One Culture 2024), TURANDOT by Andrei Serban (Greek National Opera, Odeon of Herodes Atticus 2025). She has trained in workshops and dance intensives by: Damien Jalet and Aimilios Arapoglou, Akira Yoshida, Sharon Eyal, Maayan Sheinfeld (Ohad Naharin), Euripides Laskarides, Samuel Lefeuvre (Peeping Tom), Mickaël Frappat & Attila Ronai (Hofesh Shechter), Kristina Alleyne (Akram Khan), Archie Burnett, Viktor Bukovy, and Yoshie Koda.
She presented her first solo piece FALL(T) in Brussels Dance Contest (2022) and at Roes Theatre (2024) in Athens. She has worked as an assistant choreographer to Michalis Theophanous in his solo performance ECDYSIS (ODD 2025-Onassis Foundation). In 2024, she founded Tzamia Krystalla, a performance space in Athens that also houses her rehearsal and workshop space. She worked as a movement consultant at Iphigenia en Tauris by Giorgos Nanouris (Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus 2021). In 2017 she founded ERGO, a production company, team of creatives and performers, and has choreographed: CORPO, TO THE ABYSS, HOLY FATHER (2017, Contemporary Theatre of Athens), PiETA (2018, Roes Theatre) and PiETA II (2019, Alternative Stage, Greek National Opera, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre), Composition for six bodies (2020, Plato’s Academia), GLOSSOLALIA (2022, Ergo Collective), TABI (2022, Athens Video Dance Project), and ATITLON (Anna Maria Kalouta Theatre 2024- Sychrono Theatro 2025). In 2021-2022, she choreographed, and performed in, THIS IS A SPACE, an experimental character-based lab presented to the audience in different phases of creation: PHASE 0 (online performance), DEAR ABSENCE, FAREWELL (Phase One dance theater performance at the Drama School - National Theatre of Greece), and PROVA GENERALE (Phase Two improvisational performance at Plyfa).
Transferring her practice off and beyond the stage, she engaged with cinematic means and storytelling, and created three short films that have been selected and awarded in international film festivals: COMPOSITION snakes for her (dance film 2021),I WONDER YES I CONFESS I WONDER (2023) and SCOTÓMA (2024).
In relation to her engagement with art history she presented her academic paper “The Ambassadors: A painting about painting’’ at the annual Student Research and Creative Arts Symposium (American College of Greece 2017) and after graduating she has curated: Raging Bodies by Zoe Kravvariti (exhibition/performance 2022), In Praise of Anything Liminal (group exhibition 2021), Screening (short film festival 2021), Momentum of the Self in Portrait (group video and mixed media self-portrait exhibition 2018). In 2023, she worked as executive producer for STAGES ALIVE DAWN ETERNAL (video shoot/live performance for composer Constantine Skourlis, directed by Christos Sarris, co-produced by Onassis Foundation).
